Weldability
The weldability of a metal is usually defined as its capacity to be welded
into a specific structure that has certain properties and characteristtics
and will satisfactorily meet service requirement. Weldability involves a
large number of variables, so generalizations are difficult. As we have seen,
the material characteristics (such as the alloying elements, the impurities,
the inclusions, the grain structure, and the processing history) of the base
metal and the filler metal are important.
Because of the effects of melting and solidification and the consequent
microstructurl changes, a thoough knowledge of the phase diagram and of the
response of the metal or alloy to elevated temperature over a period of time
is essential. Also influencing weldability are mechanical and physical
properties: strength, toughness, ductility, notch sensitivity, elastic modulus,
specific heat, melting point, thermal expansion, surface-tension
characteristics of the molten metal, and corrosion resistance.
Preparation of surfaces for welding is important; so are the nature and
properties of surface oxide films and of adsorbed gases. The particular welding
process employed significantly affects the temperatures develop and their
distribution in the weld zone. Other factors are shielding gases, fluxes, the
moisture content of the coatings on electrodes, welding speed, welding
position,cooling rate, and preheating, as well as such post-welding
techniques as stress relieving and heat treating.

金屬的可焊接性一般定義是:焊接在特定結構有某些性能、特性與令人滿意接合幫助
條件的能力。可焊接性有許多的可變因素,因此要概念化是困難的。就所知的,基材與填
料金屬的性質(例如:合金元素、雜質、夾雜物、晶粒結構與處理過程)是很重要的。
因此對於熔化與固化的作用、顯為結構改變的結果、相圖與升溫時金屬(或合金)的
反應完善的知識是必要的。也就是機械性質與物理性質對可焊接性是有影響的:強度、韌
性、延展性、缺口敏感性、彈性模數、比熱、熔點、熱擴散、融化金屬之表面張力、與抗
腐蝕性。
表面處理對於焊接是很重要的;也就是表面氧化膜、吸附氣體的種類與特性。在特殊
焊接過程,對焊接區域的溫度變化與分布有顯著的作用。而其他因素有:保護氣體、助熔
劑、電極塗層的水分含量、焊接速度、焊接劑、冷卻率、預熱方式、焊接後技術(如消除
應力與熱處理)。
