[Work] Longman Complete test 2, intergrated writing
The reading passage describes two kinds of motivation: extrinsic motivation
and intrinsic motivation. The former comes form a reward outside the
individual, while the latter is the result of being willing to do something
intrinsically. The case where one is intrinsically motivated at the beginning
but lose such motivation because some extrinsic rewards are given to him is
called overjustification.
In the listening passage, the professor tells a story of Marnie, a girl
who used to enjoy singing as a child. She enjoyed singing so much that she
sang at school, community events and in front of family members. In this
period of time, she sang out of intrinsic motivation. However, when Marnie
grew up, she did not like singing like she did as a child because everyone
expected her to sing. Even though she still earned applauses after each
performance, she just lost the passion to sing.
One day a man came to Marnie and asked if she was willing to sing
professionally, which meant that she would sign a contract which would give
her great financial support. Knowing that she was not interested in singing
at all, though, Marnie signed the contract still. In this case, while she
sang because of the intrinsic motivation as a child, the outer reward,
financial support here, replaced the intrinsic motivation and became the only
motivation for her to sing. Such a process is called overjustification, as
mentioned in the reading passage.
