Your city has decided to build a statue or monument to honor a famous
person in your country. Who would you choose? Use reasons and specific
examples to support your choice.
======================================================================
For me, a person deserving to be honored should contribute to his country or
community, or at least, devote himself to certain filed which impacts the
society. Therefore, if my city plans to construct a building in honor of
someone, I would suggest a technology leader, who has impacted and made some
contribution to IC industry in Taiwan. Yes. Morris Chang, the Father of
Semiconductor Foundry. Following are the reasons why I choose him as the
famous contemporary to be honored.
Back to 80’s or 90’s, the time at which the semiconductor industry in
Taiwan just began to bloom. The government planed to bring up semiconductor
fabrication industry first. They had prepared almost everything, sufficient
capital and hardware. However, there was no leader to run an experimental
business in Industrial Technology Research Institutes (ITRI) in Hsin-Chiu.
So, the Primer Sun decided to persuade Morris to come back to Taiwan, who had
rich experience in Texas Instrument (TI). As far as I know, it’s still not
easy to earn a job in TI. However Morris gave up the position as a vice
president in TI and then came back to Taiwan and led a group in ITRI,
developing Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) technology. Soon
after, with the government’s aid, he pushed the company to the top one in
the world. Even now, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) still
occupies almost half of the foundry market and earns Taiwan thousands of
money.
Besides the economics revenue the company has realized, what really wins my
respect is the “cluster effect” of whole Integrated Circuit(IC) industries
booming with TSMC, including circuit design, package, fabrication equipment,
and further downstream application industry, like PC industry. This effect
not only brings more economic benefits to Taiwan, but also raises a lot of
science and technology experts in Taiwan. I believe, without these people,
IPOD or WII could not be realized so fast. Dreams of mobile phones and
one-hundred-dollar notebook for lower class or children in developing
countries would be impeded.
To sum up, though Morris Chang is just a technology leader in Taiwan, his
devotion to development of TSMC and further encouragement of the whole IC
industries really impresses me. So, I would select him as an honorablly
famous person in this small island.
