Technical problem delays Kerry's flight to Turkey
A technical mishap delayed U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's departure
to Turkey on Saturday at the start of a globetrotting tour focused on
the crises in Syria and North Korea.
Kerry was to have left Washington at 7 a.m. (1100 GMT) but a problem
with the plane's door forced Kerry, his wife Teresa Heinz Kerry,
security guards, traveling press and staff to disembark for at least
two hours.
A second plane, which like the first was painted blue and white and
emblazoned with the words United States of America, was hurriedly
stocked and prepared for takeoff.
Kerry plans to meet Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in Istanbul
on Sunday to discuss the unrelenting conflict in Syria, and is then
due to hold talks in Israel and the Palestinian territories.
The talks are billed as a follow-up to U.S. President Barack Obama's
visit to the region last month, with expectations building that the
administration may take another crack at reviving the moribund Middle
East peace process.
Italy cabinet OKs 40 bil. euros in payment to firms
Italy's caretaker cabinet approved a decree on Saturday to pay some 40
billion euros (US$52 billion) of the state's debts to private companies
over the next 12 months.
The decree, intended to provide vital liquidity to cash-strapped firms
and help tackle a deep recession, had been scheduled to be approved
last Wednesday but was delayed due to doubts over how to fund the measure.
The massive backlog of bills owed by Italy's public administration
has been a longstanding source of complaint by companies which have
struggled to raise credit from banks facing increasingly tight credit
conditions themselves.
Mario Monti's outgoing government said on Saturday it was committed
to not breaching the European Union's deficit ceiling of 3 percent of
gross domestic product.
"We have to follow a path between the two requirements to help our
economy to recover… and to maintain budget discipline, "Economy
Minister Vittorio Grilli told a news conference.
