美國(全球)特殊教育的組織AAMR(American Association of Mental Retardation)，
在2007年正式改名為AAIDD
(American Association of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities)。
新名稱的含義為何? Steven J. Taylor說：
"The term intellectual and developmental disabilities is simply less
stigmatizing than mental retardation,
mental deficiency, feeble-mindedness, idiocy, imbecility,
and other terminology we have cast aside over the years."
簡而言之，就是減少標籤及污名化的作用。
