Dear audition,
Thank you for writing me about your interest in the PhD program
in sociology at the XXX University. And thanks also for your
kind words about The Cultures of Cities.
In our department, the professors do not accept students independently
of the admissions procedure of the department. You should look at
the courses that we give in the sociology program and decide if you
want to study sociology here. You can probably transfer some or
all of your MA credits, but you may have to pass our exam in social
theory, take a statistics course, and pass the qualifying oral exam
in three fields of sociology that you have mastered.
Your urban research is very interesting, and we may well have an
opportunity to work together. But you must apply to the sociology
department, and I am not a member of the admissions committee.
Make sure your personal statement is strong, and you explain both
the work that you have done and your professional goals. You can
mention me or any other professors whom you hope to work with. I
hope you have good GRE or TOFL scores, and I wish you the best of
luck.
If you have any questions about the admissions procedure or the
department, please write to the chairman, Professor XXXX
甚至都說了we may well have an opportunity to work together
Dear audition,
Thank you for writing. Your research interests would be a good
match with mine. Last year I published a book entitled Cultural
Heritage and the Challenge of Sustainability, the result of seven
years research and which took a global perspective. Now I have
started a large project on the problems of industrial heritage
conservation, which focuses on the interactions among local and
national governments, private interests, and local communities.
I will say, frankly, that the association you mention between urban
preservation and gentrification has been discussed for quite sometime.
But scholars would very much like to know more about preservation in
Taiwan (esp. since the field has been dominated by work on Europe and
North America). There's also work that needs to be done on the reasons
why communities and governments support some preservation projects, but
not others. Your topic on museums and cultural identities is also very
promising.
Our program accepts graduate students annually. You should request
materials from Mrs. XXX, our Graduate Coordinator. Specific
questions about the program can be addressed to our Graduate Director,
Professor XXXX, who will also note your existing fellowship of 3
years. I am copying them both on this response, so you have their
addresses.
I wish you good luck with your application.
