The Education for Public Service Act reduces monthly payments on federal student loans for graduates who work in public safety, public health, education, social work, or the nonprofit sector. The law provides complete loan forgiveness for graduates who work full time for ten years in public service. There is also a variety of tax incentives for education. Some people finance their return to school with after-tax 529 college savings accounts that were intended for younger family members but have no age restrictions. The accounts allow investments to be withdrawn tax-free, as long as the proceeds are spent on higher education. Depending on your income, you may be able to take advantage of tax deductions for education expenses and loan interest. You may also qualify for a tax credit reducing the amount of tax you have to pay (as opposed to deductions, which reduce your taxable income). The Lifetime Learning Credit gives tax credits of up to $2,000 per year for courses to acquire or improve job skills. And the American Opportunity Tax Credit (also called the Hope Scholarship Tax Credit) is worth up to $2,500 toward the cost of qualified tuition and related expenses. IRS Publication 970 has full details on all of these incentives. (Find it on irs.gov.) Keep in mind that the IRS doesn't allow “double-dipping,” which means that you can’t use both the deduction and one of these tax credits. Of course, speak to an accountant, if you can afford one. You can also look into a low-interest Stafford loan, the main federal loan for students, which has a fixed interest rate of 6.8 percent. If you’re working on an undergraduate degree, you may qualify for a Pell Grant, a federal grant of up to $5,350 a year available for those who demonstrate financial need. (For more on how to finance your education, see page 206.) Apply for Scholarships or Grants One of the benefits of being a student, being out of work, or working in the nonprofit or public sectors is that you can occasionally tap scholarships or breaks on tuition and other fees. So it’s always wise to ask. RozeLyn Beck discovered this when she transitioned from a long career in insurance to a position with the YWCA in Hartford, Connecticut. One of Beck’s greatest pleasures is the time she spends volunteering at hospitals and other places with her therapy dog, Cadbury. When Cadbury failed a certification training and needed to take it again, Beck considered just dropping it as she didn’t want to incur the costs. But she discovered a scholarship for the training, applied, and got it. This time, Cadbury passed and Beck was able to get back involved in an activity that means a lot to her. “It was a humbling experience,” she said. “I’d never have taken the scholarship if I didn’t need it, and I wasn’t going to let my pride get in the way.” -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 124.219.65.145
