Stearns 寫的 The Evolution of Life History （總圖有這本） Life history theory deals directly with natural selection, fitness, adaptation, and constraint. Life history evolution: The evolution of the major features of a life cycle, principally the age distribution of birth and death rates, growth rate, and the size of offspring. 所以，生活史的討論必須以族群為單位，討論這個族群的life history trait 是怎麼來的。其中包括：出生死亡率、子代數、族群成長率、壽命等等。而所謂的life history strategy，是指這個族群所共同擁有的某一種，適應環境的策略。而這種策略可能是生理上的、可能是行為上的，但是，這些表現出來的生理反應及行為，都是屬於life history trait的一種。再重新看一次，p大所說的「生物如何改變自己去適應環境」比較像是 individual ecology範疇，個體如何改變自己的行為及生理來適應環境。這是屬於how的問題。你的英文解釋是在「an organism」的層級，但是你的說明寫「一個個體」的層級，這個討論在生物的層級上就不一樣了。但是，life history所想要知道的是，這個族群為什麼要用這種機制來適應環境，這是屬於why的問題。所以，我們在一個「life cyle」所看到的特徵，必需回朔他的「lfie history」來回答why that? -- Nothing in biology makes sense, except in the light of evolution.
