[which I bought at the night market]只是一個非主要子句，就跟that子句一樣。因此如果把which I bought at the night market當成插入句的話，後方的is cheap必須變成 that子句才行，而又that子句是非主要子句，所以到最後整個句子會變成像句(4)： (4) The skirt [which I bought at the night market] [is cheap]. 也就是說，這句子會變成根本沒寫完，只有主詞The skirt，沒有主要動詞。相反的，你第一句中的is my girlfriend之所以可以成為非主要子句是因為，它並不會影響整個句子，即便少了它，整個句子在語法上依然是主要子句，不會變成沒寫完，如句(5)所示： (5) This is the girl [who I believe] [is my girlfriend].
