[Talk] university education
A major concern dealt with in the joint declaration issued
by more than 100 professors was the unwarranted increase universities.
Careless implementation of this proposal that making a university education
available to all has led to a multiplication of the number of universities
and colleges in Taiwan.
In 1990, there were 46 universities in the Taiwan area. By last year,
the number had grown up to 155.
And, during this period, the number of university students increased from
about 570000 to more than 1.1 million.
But the total amount of resources alocated by the government to higher
education has remained about the same over the years.
That means the quantity of public funding spent on each university student
has decreased considerably.
Which is why universities, both state-run and private, have had to hike
tuition by large margins, causing financial difficulties for students from
needy families.
Another consequence of the abrupt numeral increase in universities is the
fact that the quality of higher education has been going downhill all the way.
Getting into college has become so easy these days that most of those who are
accepted would have been unqualified for the strict academic training local
universities offered to their students in former days.
anybody who can simplify my aritical? thx
