Abstract
In the first part of the talk, I present the background and overview of
Chomsky's (2013, 2015) theory of labeling. In particular, I discuss how it
explains the X'-structure as well as the obligatory application and the last
resort nature of movement. As the theory is more general and abstract compared
with "fixed principles" such as the X'-theory, the EPP and the Last Resort,
it opens up a new way to explain variations among languages. In the second
part, I go over the analysis of some characteristic properties of Japanese
that I proposed in my recent works. They include free word order, multiple
subjects and a wide variety of prenominal sentential modifiers.
