Abstract
Native speakers know when parts of sentences can be left unsaid (ellipsis
constructions) and when not. Moreover, they have no problems interpreting the
missing parts and can even distinguish different types of missing elements.
What is such linguistic knowledge or competence in using and understanding
ellipsis constructions? We will learn about types of ellipsis constructions
and discuss what and how tools can be used to help uncover the grammatical
properties of the missing parts and learn to be able to use the tools,
adjusted according to the characteristics of individual languages.
