Abstract
In this talk, I present a detailed description and analysis of the
distribution and meaning contributions of the discourse particle ne in White
Hmong (also known as Hmong Daw or Hmoob Dawb). An example of the use of ne is
given in (1).
(1)
a. Kuv tsis tau dadej.
1SG not PERF shower
'I haven't showered yet.'
b. Kuv tsis tau dadej ne!
1SG not PERF shower NE
'(But) I haven't showered yet!'
I show that ne can be used in statements, yes-no questions, wh-questions, as
well as in the so-called "truncated" questions (appearing after a nominal
phrase or a conditional clause). I offer an analysis of the different yet (
potentially) related meaning contributions of ne in these environments, and
propose that ne marks contrast, at least in some of its uses.
I argue that some cases of the use of ne do not involve just the discourse
marker ne, but rather they also contain an unpronounced reportative marker no
before ne. I present an analysis of how ne interacts with no and discuss
evidence that suggests that ne may scope over a complement clause.
In addition, I show that no as a reportative marker is generally restricted to
third person reports. However, this person restriction is lifted when no
occurs with ne. I speculate on why the occurrence of ne allows no to mark
first and second person reports. I conclude by discussing implications of the
analysis.
