Taiwanese Experimental Course
台語實驗班
National Taiwan Normal University
2012 年 10 月18日至12月13日
October 18th – December 13th , 2012
CALL FOR STUDENTS
Public target: This experimental course is designed for already Mandarin
proficient international students based in Taipei. Students are required to
be fluent in Mandarin – as soon as it will be the second teaching language
after Taiwanese – and be at ease with a minimum of 1200 sinograms.
Course design : The course is scheduled for 34 hours on Tuesday and Thursday,
starting on Thursday October 18th until December 13th , from 19.30PM to 21.30PM.
Language teaching will be offered by three teachers for 3 hours a week. On
Thursday there will be one hour interactive language exchange supervised by
the three teachers and volunteer native speakers. The language of instruction
is Mandarin. This course explicitly aims at non-native-Chinese language
speakers.
Didactic approach : This experimental course relies on the paradigm of
plurilinguism such as it was developed by the Council of Europe over the last
sixty years. The theoretical framework is based on intercomprehension - often
promoted as the “Copernican Revolution of Foreign Language Teaching” - and
focuses on the systematic reuse of plurilingual skills of the learners in
order to make them operative within the minimum amount of time in oral
understanding. This experimental course between Sinitic sister languages is
the first ever conducted as a framework aiming at the comprehension of
synchronic linguistic variation as a whole. It is based on the following
principles :
* a contrastive approach based on the methods experienced by the
learners during their previous experience of initial Mandarin training,
* a particular attention to interlanguages in order to program the
linguistic progression in class through “accents”, code switching, code
shifting, calques etc.
* a reversion of the CEFR linguistic competences : an electoral speech
or formal declaration during a talkshow is more understandable than a "simple"
bargaining of an item at a night market.
* a systematic use of sample materials not designed for class
purposes : karaoke songs, TV reports, soap operas, puppet shows,
writer's readings of their works...
* the innovative didactic process called “sinogrammic transposition”
relying on literary readings of Chinese characters already known in Mandarin,
learners are trained to draw hypothesis in order to “foresee” the
pronunciation of cultural vocabulary both for oral understanding and active
lexicon extension in Taiwanese.
Course objectives : The objectives of this course are not intended to reach a
“complete” or even “equivalent” level in Taiwanese as it is in Mandarin.
The purpose is to train the students to handle theoretical and pragmatic
tools in order to be able once in direct contact with Taiwanese speakers
on the field after the experiment to deepen and strengthen one’s own autonomy
towards personal communication needs : translation, fieldwork observations in
social sciences, interviews, informal conversion with family-in-law and
friends... Oral competences are privileged.
Numerus clausus :
In order to fit with the pedagogical options selected for this experiment,
the student number will not exceed 20 learners. The students will be selected
through a “call for students” designed by Mr Yoann Goudin in cooperation
with Dr Ann Heylen who supervises the experiment.
Scientific Cooperation : The course is a collaborative academic undertaking
between The International Taiwan Studies Center (ITSC), College of Liberal
Arts at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) and Institut National des
Langues et Civilisation Orientales (INALCO), Paris. .
Tuition Fee : 3000NT . Textbook materials will be provided. Additional copying may be the
case.
Location : National Taiwan Normal University,. Teacher’s Building, Yunhe Street, No 1,
3-4F. at the Department of Taiwan Culture, Languages and Literature
雲和街 1號 3-4樓
