In each round of the auction, your total bids may not exceed your account
balance as of the beginning of that round. Outstanding asks are not included
in the account balance available for a round (because those sales are yet to
be consummated, you do not know how many points, if any, you will get for
that seat).
5.3 Multiple Enrollments in a Course and Time Conflicts
You may not bid for (or hold) multiple seats in the same section of a course;
the auction system will prevent this. However, you may simultaneously bid for
(and get) seats in multiple sections of the same course. You may also bid for
(and get into) courses that are in time conflict with each other. You can
resolve such redundancies and conflicts in your course schedule by trading
courses in successive rounds of the auction. You must resolve time conflicts
and multiple enrollments in different sections of the same course by the end
of the final round of the auction in which that section is offered, or you’
ll have to drop conflicting or multiple enrollments without recompense and be
subject to the penalties listed under Section 5.10 Changes in Course
Enrollments after the Last Auction Round. Time conflicts are indicated by a
triangular yellow icon in the “my items” box of your auction interface.

Beginning with the 1996-97 academic year, we introduced an auction-based
process for registering in Wharton’s MBA electives. The auction is designed
to achieve an equitable and efficient allocation of seats in elective courses
when demand exceeds supply. We in the Graduate Division work actively with
Wharton’s academic departments to provide adequate capacity in all our
courses, but shortages do sometimes arise, particularly when course demand is
driven by the popularity of individual professors. The auction is intended to
transform what might otherwise be a random outcome, in such cases, into a
matter of choice for you. The choice is not necessarily easy; it requires of
you a careful consideration of your priorities and has consequences on your
future choices. To use the auction effectively, however, you do not need to
have prior experience with auctions or trading. All you need to understand
about the auction’s mechanics and rules is described here. For each semester
’s auction, you will need to spend some time (perhaps a couple of hours each
semester) to look at the past history of clearing prices for the elective
courses you are considering and to weigh your course preferences.
