Dawn’s first light touches the clifftops across the gorge as we descend the ridge below the switchbacks. A few pack trains clop and jingle by on their way to the rim. We strain to recognize the drivers, some no more than children when we last lived here. Others, like us, have aged enough that we hesitate to hail them for fear they are not who we think. We reach the dry canyon floor. Ashy lenses of old agave roasting pits erode from the gravel shelving the wash in the early light. The people who prepared this delicacy a century ago still seem present along these benches.
