1)只有昆蟲綱的動物才可以叫做insect，例如蜘蛛就不是insect
但是有些人看到蜘蛛也會叫bug，所以普通說來bug沒分那麼細
(是否因為國中生物當掉才會叫蜘蛛為bug我就不知道了)
2)bug用法比較活，例如
He bugs me 他令我很不爽
There's a bug in your program 你的程式有問題
3)insect比bug正式
我今天寫正式文章bug這個字大概不會出現，出現的都是insect，如
Our research on the LD50 dosage of the chemical on common insects show...
我們以本化學物執行一般昆蟲的半數致死量研究，顯示...
但是我在一般對話時insect就較少出現，bug出現的比較多，如
I live right by the park, and bugs fly into my apartment all the time
我住在公園旁邊，每天都有蟲子飛進我家
