Toward Better Writing and Clearer Thinking.
Learning to write without "is" and the other, equivalent forms of "to be"
(such as be, was, am, are, etc.) can be challenging, and often requires a
writer to improve their vocabulary and think more deeply about their material.
However, once practiced, writing in this style becomes easier.
Most importantly, however, learning to avoid "is" where possible leads to much
more effective writing as well as clarified thinking.
Quick Tips:
"Never use "is" - or any other form of "to be" - when there is a more
accurate alternative.
"Words to avoid: is, be, being, been, am, are, was, were.
"Alternative words: has, do, can, will, shall, tends, ought, may.
"Use descriptive verbs: weighs, measures, appears, equals, represents,
describes, seems.
"Pay attention to the objective difference between measurements or
diagnoses and the things they describe.
