這兩篇的分析還蠻全面性的
大致的理由是因為: 早期英國的 spelling 也沒有統一
剛移民到美國的英國人也是使用著沒有統一的 spelling
後來幾本權威性的字典先後出版
"Current British English spellings follow, for the most part, those of
Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language (1755)"
"Many of the now characteristic American English spellings were introduced,
although often not created, by Noah Webster in his An American Dictionary
of the English Language of 1828."
兩國的 spelling 也就此定調
此外, 美國和英國許多發音和詞彙的不同
也是導因於幾百年來兩地語言和文化的獨立演化
同樣的現象也在台海兩岸之間發生
(除了簡體字這種系統性的改變以外)
