Not all were happy with Amazon’s progress, however. Many traditional
retailers in the United States were going bankrupt, while major competitors
such as Walmart and Best Buy were forced to invest aggressively in online
retailing to prevent their market share from eroding. Every sector appeared
to be affected; according to many industry analysts and observers, Amazon
became the largest retailer of apparel in the United States in 2018, Amazon’
s rapid category expansion and dominance fueled anxieties that America’s
tech giants were becoming too big and powerful. This led some, including US
Senator and Democratic presidential nominee Elizabeth Warren to call for the
breakup of the company.5 The European Union then launched an investigation
into Amazon’s use of third-party retailer data on its platform.6 Meanwhile,
just three months after Amazon announced that it would split the long-awaited
HQ2 between New York City and Arlington, Virginia, the company pulled out of
the New York City headquarters after facing significant pushback from local
communities.
