我們將(C)代入原文，整個句子成為：
Often visible as smog, [ozone 的修飾語]
ozone is formed in the atmosphere, [子句一]
and when
hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, [子句二主詞部]
two major pollutants emitted by automobiles, [上述主詞之同位語]
react with sunlight. [子句二動詞部]
整個句子中只有兩個子句，只需要一個連接詞就夠了。
因此 and when 就會多出一個連接詞。
至於
: 如果要用 and when + 子句，那前面應該
: 也要有一樣的 which/where/how 的子句做平行才對
是不一定的。
因為我們也可以寫出
子句一 + and + (when 子句二 + 子句三) 的句子啊。
