A pipe is in his mouth. 可以先看成是這樣： My father─a pipe is in his mouth─is in deep thought. 想用雙破折號（等同括號）補充說明此時爸爸嘴裡叼根煙斗， "My father is in deep thought"是主要句子。雙破折號中的子句是獨立於"My father..."主句之外的，所以可以完整呈現，但如果我們想把破折號去掉，改為逗號，就會變成： My father, a pipe is in his mouth, is in deep thought. 根據英文句法，一個基本句子不能有兩個動詞（兩個is），至少得把兩個逗號中的句子改為「獨立分詞構句」： My father, a pipe being in his mouth, is in deep thought. 而由於be動詞的性質（基本上只有語法功能，沒有實質意義），常常可以省略，所以簡化成： My father, a pipe in his mouth, is in deep thought. 這樣稍微了解了嗎？ -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 1.162.16.136
