Many people are shocked to learn that it is possible to be elected President of the United States even if another candidate receives more votes than you. The reason for this is that, technically, it's not the voters who elect the President, but the members of a group called Electoral College. When you vote for the candidate of you choice, you're actually voting for an Electoral College member who supports that candidate. Each state gets a number of Electoral College members equal to the number of elected representatives it sends to the United States Congress. number is not based entirely on population, in rare cases it is possible to have a candidate win even if he or she loses the popular vote. This has happened for sure for three times in US history; most notably when George W. Bush won over Al Gore in their controversial year 2000 tussle.
