人們稱我為饅頭伯,是源自聯合報記者王宏舜先生的2010/8/6半版焦點特寫. 我的翻譯經驗始自大學三年級,半瓶醋(smattering)時期.當時受一家出版社委託,把五本簡化的英文名著譯成中文,其中包括《莎士比亞故事》,《簡愛》,與《蝴蝶夢》.大學畢業後,主要是中譯英與英文寫作. 以中譯英來說,翻譯的目的是讓英美人士看得懂,最好有像看中文一樣的理解與欣賞或者認同.但是有些東西無法英譯.最顯著的是中文的一些文字遊戲,例如林太乙女士受聯合國委託英譯《鏡花緣》,遇到書內下述句子,如何英譯: 紫芝道:我說一個「土」字,翻了一個觔斗,變成「干」字.秀英道:我用「由」字,翻個觔斗 ,變成「甲」字. 根本無法做有意義的英譯.《鏡花緣》有許多部份沒有英譯,因此,算是節譯.即使節譯,因受中文限制也譯的不好,不是優美的英美語文.我為編《傳世漢英-英漢寶庫》閱讀林女士的Flowers in the Mirror時,看不到一半就放棄了.原因是難以找到漢英對照的正確而優美的例句. 這是我最近在兒子家齊協助下採訪譯寫Success Comes from Solving Problems: 20 Famous Elites Tell Their Stories《成功源自解決疑難:20篇精英成名史》時,定為英漢對照的原因之一.《成功…》一書的原始資料,絕大部份是中文.由於漢英的語法差異等因素,假如先寫中文,隨中文的語法結構再譯成英文,會被英美人士認為是怪怪的,不合他們的語法,或者難以理解.《成功…》的主要目的是把我兩個家鄉濟南商河與台灣台北推介給世人,當然應以英文優先.於是,我譯寫《成功…》時,是先寫英文後寫中文,或者英漢一起寫, 中文隨英文的習慣語法而調適. 在採訪譯寫《成功…》過程中,也遇到一些某種程度的文字遊戲,均已設法克服了.書內比較有趣或值得再錘煉的詞句有以下多處,或許可供初學翻譯者參考,並祈請方家指正: *前兩週(上課)完全是「鴨子聽雷」. In the first two weeks, it was all Greek to me. *…決定「拼下去」. …I decided to fight it out. *「起承轉合」introduction, development, transition, and conclusion. *關鍵時刻讓他「輾轉難眠」,早白了頭. … at some critical moments his role caused him to toss and turn in his sleep and to turn prematurely gray. *玩「雙率交易」或「炒匯」. … to initiate its “currency carry trade” or currency speculation … *婚姻有時是兩個人「相欠債」(台灣俗語). … marriage means sometimes "owing each other.” *就像興采可以「跌破大家眼鏡」,成功地研發出咖啡紗一樣. … just as happened with Singtex, which made everyone’s jaw drop to the floor when we had successfully developed our coffee yarn. *「人要克服困難,不要被困難克服」We should conquer difficulties but not be conquered by them. *遭遇任何難題時要「面對它,接受它,處理它,放下它」. When encountering any difficult problem, one should face it, accept it, deal with it, then let it go; In encountering any difficulty, one should face it, accept it, tackle it, and forget it.何者為優? *用「千手護持,千眼照見」的慈悲與智慧來「關懷眾生」. … applying the compassion and wisdom of “protection and support with a thousand hands, and seeing everything clearly in its reflection with a thousand eyes” to show solicitous care for all living creatures. *被「網友稱為「仁醫」與「德神」. Some “netizens” (that is, online commentators) have referred to him as a “benevolent physician” and a “virtue fanatic.” *「吃飯皇帝大」. Nothing’s bigger than eating. *「大富由天,小富由勤」. Diligence brings small wealth, while fate brings immense fortune. *英國的博士班基本上是「放牛吃草」. PhD programs in the United Kingdom were basically ‘laissez-faire’ [‘letting the cattle graze,’ i.e., leaving students free to work largely on their own] and very hands-off. *誠盼讀者能從中受惠,學會「正向思考」,「內省」,「感恩」,「回饋」,「提昇心性」,「自我療愈」,以遠離病痛. I sincerely hope that readers will benefit from this collection by learning and practicing positive thinking, introspection, appreciation, reciprocation, elevation of the nature of mind, and self-healing so as to keep illness away. *「退一步海闊天空」. Taking one step back makes the entire world seem bright. *這就是《論語》中孔子所說「一以貫之」的效用. This is the effect of ‘one thread which runs through all the matters,’ as said by Confucius in Confucian Analects. *此時可以達到「天人合一」的境界. At this point one could reach the state of harmony with nature. *可以開發出「超覺知」[超感官知覺]等潛能. … could such potentials as extrasensory perception be developed. *也就是「應無所住而生其心.」所謂「真空妙有」就是智慧的本質. This approach would also involve ‘letting your mind function freely, without abiding anywhere or in anything.’ The Buddhist statement that ‘the true void is the mysteriously existing’ would mean the essence of wisdom. *「一代師表」. … a virtuous exemplar for our current generation. *「得天下英才而教育之,莫如教育而得天下之英才」. Teaching students to be outstanding should be favored over admitting outstanding students. *「好高騖遠」. To aspire far beyond one’s capabilities; … to bite off at first more than you can chew.何者為優? *「眼高手低」.To have grandiose aims but puny abilities *…儒家之道,例如「正名」,「務實」,「明理」,「重義輕利」,「知所先後」,「道並行而不悖」,「執兩用中」,「守經通權」,「因地制宜」,「因勢利導」,「和而不同」, 以及「群而不黨」. … the Confucian ones (principles): for example, proper definitions, practicality, rationality, placing justice above one’s own interests, essence and orderliness, tolerance of different viewpoints, analyzing the extremes in search of the optimal, adhering to principles and adapting to one’s environment, adapting measures to suit local conditions, judiciously determining one’s action according to circumstances, reconciling while recognizing differences, and being sociable but not clannish. *…說,「為世間留下美好種子,人生才不會白過」. … said that a person’s life will not be in vain as long as he leaves a good seed in the world. *最終目的是「化繁為簡」「離苦得樂」. The ultimate purposes are simplification and exchanging hardship for happiness. *…鼓勵政大學生求職時『看遠不看近』. ... encouraged students at NCCU to "take the long view” in their job search. *學術界批判我是「偽科學」,「怪力亂神」,「科學神話」. Academia criticized my views as‘pseudoscience, weirdness, or scientific myth. *…以便對事務的「來龍去脈」「一目瞭然」. … so as to see the ins and outs of an event clearly. *「藥補不如食補;食補不如功補」. Dietary nutrition is better than medicine; and qigong nourishment is even better than dietary nutrition. *「禮義廉恥」,國之四維,四維不彰,國乃滅亡. Courtesy, righteousness, incorruption, and a sense of shame are the four preservations of a country; if they are not conspicuous, the country will be annihilated. *他們不用「填鴨式的教育方法」. They did not use the cramming method of teaching like force-feeding ducks.台灣的教學環境目前依然往往是「填鴨式的教學」. Taiwan’s current educational environment still tends to spoon-feed students. 一直還是走不出「填鴨式的教學方式」. … has not gotten away from the spoon-feeding or duck-stuffing style of teaching. 何者為優? *他兒時「調皮搗蛋」,「辜負父母期望」. As a boy, he was saucy and mischievous. He failed his parents …. *他成功地培養成專注,「心無旁鶩」.並信守珍諺:「有所得必有所失」.He has successfully developed his own capacity for concentration and is no longer distracted by extraneous thoughts. Besides, he maintained a venerable precept: nothing is gained without sacrifice. *「祝您心想事成」.
