這個比較句的補足法，應該不是這樣的。如果按照這樣解釋，就會讓
complex life-forms 對到 scientists;
emerged 對到 had thought
整個比較句型的語意絕對錯誤。
我們知道GMAT在考比較句型的時候，非常重視
是「主詞比主詞」還是「受詞比受詞」，
因而常會考是否需要動詞存在的考法。因此原po所還原的句子一定
會與GMAT的考法──也就是英文的文法──相衝突。
基本上，英語不同級比較句型 more ... than 或 less ... than
中 more, less 是副詞，後面接形容詞或副詞構成比較級，
than 是連接詞，後面接從屬子句。than 的前後拆開看，扣掉
比較級形容詞或副詞外，應該都是完整的獨立子句，這樣文法才對。
因此
He is taller than I. 還原後會是
He is (more) tall than I (am tall). 注意後面的 am tall
所以，本題目正確答案句
complex life-forms emerged much earlier than previously thought
還原之後，應該是下面兩種可能之一，這樣才能讓主詞對到，語意才不會錯誤。
1. complex life-forms emerged much earlier than
complex life-forms (had) previously (been) thought (to emerge early).
或
2. complex life-forms emerged much earlier than
complex life-forms (were) previously thought (to emerge early).
兩種寫法，文法書上都有人說，解釋起來比較有理的是第二種。
因為第一種的省法會有跳字的現象，第二種就沒有。
至於完成式 (had been) 在 (1) 時間沒有混淆之虞，或
(2) 作者不想強調時間先後的情況下，可以轉成簡單過去式，
這也是我們知道的時態轉換。而原文因為有 previously，所以
應該不會有混淆之虞，因此還原成第二種寫法，在時態上也說得通。
結論，比較句型是GMAT常考的主題之一，在碰到特殊省略時，常常是考點所在。
我們在教學時，都會特別提醒同學注意，因為若還原不回去，常常都會選得
很心虛。
