The president of the XYZ Insurance Company has just reviewed a printout from the electronic data processing department which indicates that the loss experience on professional liability insurance (a substantial block of business) has deteriorated badly in the state of Nevcal. He calls a conference of his underwriting, actuarial , claims , law, and marketing officers and his chief assistant to resolve the problem. After statement of the problem by the president, the claims officer points out the influence on verdicts of expert testimony, relaxation of rules of evidence, and weaknesses in the statute of limitations in the state of Nevcal. He is not optimistic about reversing these trends.
