時態的定位功能很重 I was wondering/thinking 帶有我「原本」在想在奇怪的意思 但現在此刻已經不奇怪不想了 比方在聚會場合中, 你你看見一個你原以為已經離場的人 會這樣說: I thought you were gone. 卻不能說: I think you were gone 因為你此刻明明眼睛看著他, 知道他沒走. I was thinking about... 我剛才在想(到) (但現在沒在想了) I have been thinking about... 我一直在想 (從先前到現在) I am thinking about... 我此刻正在想 I think about ... all the time 無時無刻不在想 I thought about ... all the time 那段時間我無時無刻不在想 英文人下意識很受時態表達控制, 曾有一起有名案件 一名白人母親謊報孩子被黑人搶走去不知去向 但她在哭訴時一再說 (大致如此): I love"d" them so much.
