原文
Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by a bacillus bacterium called
Mycobacterium leprae.
The disease mainly affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, the upper respiratory
tract and the eyes, causing disfigurement and loss of nerve sensitivity.
Leprosy has existed for thousands of years and once affected every
continent.
Although almost defeated by public awareness and new medication in the
1940s, the disease had made a comeback:In 2002, there were 534,000 reported
leprosy patients in the world, but about 620,00 new cases were detected during
2003.
翻譯
痲瘋症是由一種叫做麻風桿菌的細菌所引發的慢性傳染疾病。
主要影響在人的皮膚，周邊神經，上呼吸道與眼睛上面，會造成毀容，失去知覺等症狀。
已經存在世上好幾千年並在各地都有此疾病。
雖然已在西元一九四九年時能用藥物和我們的認識去治療與預防此疾病。
不過二零零二年時又開始爆發，多達五十四萬人的痲瘋患者於世界各地。
但大約六萬二千多的患者都是在二零零三年所發現的。
